trainer of the USSR. He was born in 1947 in the village Nagornoe, Kochetovskaya region. He began going in for weight lifting in 1956. In 1969 he arrived at our town. In 1970 he was taken to the All-Union competitions and won the second place there.

But now there is the Avenue of the Olympic Champions at this street. 10 banners include the portraits of our Olympic champions and some information about their life and sport career. 2 banners promote the healthy way of life. This avenue appeared in order to thank sportsmen for their great achievements and to show them our respect. Also the government of our town is going to build a monument in honour to our Olympic champions. It will be 11 bronze figures as high as a man. In the centre of this complex the figure of Vasily Alekseev will be.

Palace. It was built in 1956. A lot of young people in our town start their trainings in various sport sections there. It really became the school of world-class masters. About 2000 people of different age go in for sport there now. About half of all sportsmen are swimmers.

The inhabitants of Shakhty believe that 11 Olympic champions is not a limit for our town. There are a lot of talented young sportsmen in Shakhty now. They work hard and reach great results. Some years later their names will be well-known throughout the world.
