Legends of an "unknown land of the south" (terra australis incognita) date back to Roman times and were commonplace in medieval geography.
The name "Australia" was popularized by the 1814 work A Voyage to Terra Australis by the navigator Matthew Flinders, the first recorded person to circumnavigate Australia. Though its title reflected the British Admiralty’s usage.

Etymology

Dark blue colour of the flag is a symbol of the ocean surrounding Australia. There is an image of constellation of the Southern cross in the middle of the flag. There are 6 stars on the flag symbolizing six states of the Australian Union. Seven beams of the star designate six states and the territory of Papya. The five-pointed star symbolizes federal district Canberra. The flag is approved in 1954.

There are 50 species of kangaroo. Some stand as tall as a man and some are as small as a cat. They be seen in many of the forests and parks.

Koala lives on leaves. About 400 species of birds in Australia are found nowhere else in the world. There are 55 species of parrots in Australia. They are very colorful. The Emu is the most interesting bird in Australia. It is big and cannot fly. The kookaburra is another interesting Australian bird. It cannot sing, but laughs like a human.

In the year 2000 Australia hosted the Olympics in Sydney.
