are winter months. Winter is the coldest season. However it is a charming and beautiful time of year. It often snows in winter. All trees, apart from spruce trees, are bare. Frozen ground is covered with snowdrifts. It is only in winter when we can see such wonderful birds as bullfinches, crossbills, waxwings and other ones.
Children especially love this time of year. They spend a lot of time outside sleighing, skating and skiing. There are many ice-runs around. Many people go to skating rinks. In some parks you can see ice sculptures which are real works of art. Families with little children can have fun building a snowman.
Winter is a magic time of year. In winter people celebrate the New Year. This is the time when every person turns into a little boy or girl and starts to believe in miracles. It is only in winter when you can wake up in the morning and notice fantastic frosty patterns on your room’s window. When it snows you can see how beautiful and unique every snowflake is.

is quite old for a cat. She is eleven years old. Matilda is very fluffy. Her back is black and her belly and chest are white. She also has a black muzzle with long white whiskers. Her legs and paws are white. Matilda has big eyes. Her eyes are light green, but they become yellow in bright sunlight. She has got big black ears and a small pink nose.
As any other cat Matilda loves sleeping, eating and playing. Her favourite places are an armchair in the living room and a windowsill in my parents’ bedroom. Matilda also likes lying on my desk and especially on the computer keyboard!
Her favourite food is meat and boiled fish. She also likes sour cream, soft cheese and ham. Sometimes we buy cat food and cat grass for her. She has a lot of cat toys to play with. She enjoys hunting flies, spiders and sunbeams.
My mother found Matilda in our street and brought her home. The cat became a real friend for me. We grew up together. When I was a little child, we used to play hide-and-seek and catch-up.
She often sits on my lap and purrs. She is always near me when I am sad or ill. I love my cat.

The original version of the salad was invented in the 1860s by a Belgian chef, Lucien Olivier. At that time he worked in Hermitage, one of Moscow’s most celebrated restaurants. The salad very quickly became a specialty dish which everyone wanted to try.
The exact recipe, particularly that of the dressing, was kept a secret. Today’s popular version of Olivier salad only faintly resembles Olivier’s original creation. It is known as a version of Ivanov’s Stolichny salad.

September is usually warm and quite dry. Only at the end of September the weather becomes cool and sometimes rainy. October is usually cool and rainy. Mornings in October are cold and foggy. November is cold and rainy, it is often windy too. The daytime temperatures are usually above zero, but nights can be frosty.
December is usually cold and windy. The beginning of the month can be rainy. We also usually have the first snow in December. Lakes in our city start to freeze. January is frosty and often snowy. We sometimes have blizzards in January and there is often ice on our roads. February is quite cold, but we usually have a thaw at the end of the months.
The beginning of March is usually cold and snowy. But at the end of March and in April the weather becomes warmer. These months are usually windy and foggy. The beginning of May is often quite cool. There are heavy rains and thunderstorms. But the end of May is usually dry and often even hot.
