He was in Moldova in June 1941, close to the border, and his aerodrome was bombed on June 22, the first day of the war. His first battle in the air ended in a catastrophe: he hit a Soviet plane - a light bomber Su-2 of the 211th bomber regiment. His pilot survived, but the navigator Semyonov was killed.
