Six of Earth’s seven continents are inhabited on a large

scale. Asia is the most populated continent, with its 4.3 billion inhabitants. This accounts for 60% of the worlds population. The two most populated countries of the world are China and India. These countries together constitute about 37% of the whole population of our planet. Africa is the second most populated continent. It is home for about one billion people. This makes 15% of the world’s population. Europe has 733 million people and this makes up 12%. Latin American and Caribbean regions are home to around 600 million people (9 %). Northern America, primarily consisting of the United States and Canada, has a population of around 352 million (5%), and Oceania, the least populated region, has about 35 million inhabitants (0.5%). What about Antarctica? Though it is not permanently inhabited by anybody, Antarctica has a small, changing international population, living in polar science stations.

Medicine has existed for thousands of years. At first, medicine

was rather an art than science. It was little based on skills and knowledge but, instead, it had connections to the religious beliefs. At the early stages of medicine, doctors relied on religious rituals in the same way as on medication. For example, a medicine man would apply herbs and say prayers for healing. The first physicians thought that bloodletting was the best treatment of all. In recent centuries, since the advent of science, most medicine has become a combination of art and science. Much depends on the talent of the doctor and on the efficiency of drugs and surgery. Nowadays, we come to understand more and more about our body and to know what is going on inside the cells. Also, genetic engineering opens up new perspectives for treating inherited diseases. And, of course, new medical technologies have already saves millions of lives.

Early in the morning, Evenki natives in the hills northwest

of Lake Baikal observed a column of blue light. It was nearly as bright as the Sun, and it was moving across the sky. About ten minutes later, there was a flash and a sound similar to artillery fire. Eyewitnesses reported that the source of the sound was moving from the east to the north following the movement of the blue light. The sound was accompanied by a shock wave that knocked people off their feet and broke windows in the houses hundreds of kilometres away. As it often happens, eyewitnesses’ accounts varied regarding the sequence and duration of the events. On that day the legendary Tungus meteorite or a small comet fell on the Earth near the river called Podkamennaya Tunguska in Siberia. It happened at about seven o’clock in the morning, on the 30th of June 1908. The first expedition came to the site only ten years later.

Throughout the history of education the most common means of

maintaining discipline in schools was corporal punishment. While a child was at school, a teacher was expected to act as a parent, with the same means of making children obey as the parents had. This often meant that school students were often punished with a cane if they did something wrong. Corporal punishment at schools has now disappeared from all European countries. Thirty-one US states have banned it, but the other nineteen states (mostly in the South) continue to allow corporal punishment in schools. Teachers have the right to apply corporal punishment, although many choose not to do so. Official corporal punishment, often by caning, remains commonplace in schools in some Asian, African and Caribbean countries. Generally speaking, most countries retain punishment for misbehavior, but it usually takes non-corporal forms such as detention after the lessons. In Russia corporal punishment in schools was banned in 1863.

A female chimp has learned how to use the Arabic

numerals, 1 to 9, to memorise the order of five numbers. She, unlike males, was able to remember the sequence of at least five numbers. This is the same or even more than pre-school children can do. It comes as no surprise to scientists who discover something else that chimpanzees can do every year, bringing them closer to us. People can normally remember a sevendigit number at first sight. This is our brain’s “magic number”. A chimp’s brain is only half the size of ours. Yet, they remember five digits. In an experiment, a chimp was shown five numbers on a computer screen. Her task was then to touch each number in the correct order. In order to perform the task successfully, she had to memorise all the numbers. And she did. She got the fourth number correct 90 % of the time, and the fifth number correct 65 % of the time.

Human evolution is a lengthy process of change by which

people originated from their apelike ancestors. The traits that we today recognize as human evolved over a period of approximately six million years. One of the earliest human traits was the ability to walk on two legs. This ability evolved some four million years ago. A large and complex brain, the ability to use tools and the capacity for language have developed more recently. Some studies lead us to believe that humans have some relationship to another group of primate species, the apes. Scientists say that humans and the great apes of Africa — chimpanzees and gorillas — share a common ancestor who lived between 8 and 6 million years ago. However, researchers do not all agree about how these species are related to the modern human. Genetic research into this relationship has produced some controversial results and more discoveries, perhaps sensational ones, are to be expected.

Cheating in tests is becoming more sophisticated. These cases are

referred to as exam-room cheating. The statistical findings show that between 3-5% of exam candidates are likely to be cheating with almost none of these pupils being caught. A recent trend has been for more friends, helping their peers to see questions in advance. This has been prompted by increasingly high demands on the learners to perform well. If the supervision in exam rooms becomes lax, cheating is always on the rise. Cheating appears to be a global phenomenon with little cultural variation. Originally it was thought that cheating was more typical for the so called “face-saving” cultures where the observable behaviour is not the same as unobserved actions. Wherever the stakes are high and there is an advantage and an opportunity to cheat, it seems to happen everywhere. Highly industrialised and poor nations think alike.

Here is some advice about good manners and etiquette when

eating food. If you are invited to dinner and you cannot eat a certain type of food, tell your host several days before the dinner party. If you are a guest, it is polite to wait until your host starts eating or when your host shows you in some way that you can start eating without waiting for him or her. Mind that is good manners to chew and swallow the food that is in your mouth and only then should you take a drink. Remember to show your appreciation of the food from time to time. It is a popular mistake that chicken can be eaten with your fingers. In fact, a piece of chicken or a slice of pizza can be eaten with your fingers if you are at a barbecue or in an informal company. Otherwise always use a knife and a fork. It is useful to note that when eating bread rolls, break off a piece of bread and only then use the knife for buttering the bread. If you are using the knife, do not lick or put your knife in your mouth even though there is something delicious on the blade. You will certainly not put your elbows on the table and you will never reach for food over somebody’s plate. Always ask for something you need to be passed over to you. And, you had better not talk with food in your mouth to tell others something interesting.

The less children play video games, or watch television, the

less aggressive they become, suggests a scientific study. The American research looked at the effects of reducing the amount of computer games played, or television watched by third and fourth graders, who are aged approximately eight or nine. It was found that the more television and computer games the children had seen, the more aggressive they were. This means that television, and, more recently, games have a direct influence on such behaviour. There are potential benefits in reducing the amount of access children have to TV or computer games. This is supported by the findings of reductions in physical and verbal aggression in children who have limited exposure to television, video and computer games. Watching aggressive behaviour shapes the way children see the world and their behaviour. They learn that angry people do aggressive things and start to imitate if the circumstances prompt similar solutions.

Every nation has its customs. Modern Americans are very serious

about body hygiene while in the 19th century washing one’s body frequently was considered bad for health as it “removed protection from the skin”. Most Western people think it proper to enter a house without changing shoes, while in Korea it is a desecration of the house. An American, greeting a stranger by saying “Hi mate, great to meet you!” may not be favourably regarded in a country where more formal modes of address are usual. In the West, business cards are given a cursory glance. In Japan, they are regarded with respect. In Britain, most business presentations would include a joke, which is unheard of at conferences in Japan or China. Small talk and relationship building are considered important in the Arab world between a seller and a customer. British people prefer talking about the weather. The Japanese value silence while the Italians like to express emotions.

Choose one photo to present to your friend. You will have to start speaking in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes. You have to talk continuously. In your talk remember to speak about:

• where and when the photo was taken
• what/who is in the photo
• what is happening
• why you keep the photo in your album
• why you decided to show the picture to your friend
You have to talk continuously, starting with: “I’ve chosen photo number …”

Ваш ответ To begin with, I’d like to

say that I have a friend. His name is Nick. He lives in England, and sometimes I come to see him there.
Well, this photo was taken in England last summer while visiting my friend. Nick works as a bus driver, so I took this picture the moment he was just doing his job.
As I have just mentioned, you can see my friend Nick sitting at the wheel of his bus. Nick is a nice guy. He has short brown hair, fine figure, and he is a strong man.
Actually, not much is happening in the photo. Nick is holding the wheel of his bus, looking and smiling at me. That was me who asked him to turn around and look at me, because at that time I was on the point of taking the picture.
Why do I keep this photo in my album? You know, taking photos is my hobby. I always do it when I see something worth being photographed. Meeting Nick was an important event for me, and I just couldn’t help taking the photo. In addition to it, I love my friend. It’s quite natural to take photos of people you love.
I decided to show this picture to you because you have always wanted to know how Nick looks like. And this picture is the best one.
Actually, if you want to see some more, I will show them to you next time. Now we have to leave for school. Let’s go!

As I have just mentioned, you can see my aunt Julia. She has always wanted to be a doctor, so you can see her in a doctor’s smock. She is a pretty young woman, very slim, and kind.
Actually, not much is happening in the photo. Julia is looking and smiling at me. She is holding a pen and some papers. She is writing something, maybe her patent’s anamnesis. Julia is a good doctor, she cares for her patients very much.
Why do I keep this photo in my album? Well, it’s just because I wanted to have a photo of my aunt wearing a special medical uniform. That’s why I asked my aunt to tear herself away from her work and let me take the photo.
I decided to show this picture to you because you have always wanted to know how Julia looks like. And what’s more, I hope you will help me to edit some details of this photo using a special graphic programme. I know that you are an expert in computer design.

As I have just mentioned, you can see my aunt Victoria. She has always wanted to be a teacher of foreign languages, so you can see her in her teacher’s room. She is a pretty woman, very clever, and kind. Her hair is red and curly. Victoria is short-sighted and has to wear glasses. Besides, you can see a table with so many dictionaries on it.
Actually, not much is happening in the photo. Victoria is looking and smiling at me. She is having a pen, and a sheet of paper. I guess, my aunt is preparing for a lesson. Maybe she is writing some vocabulary out of the dictionaries or making some tests for her students. Victoria is a very inventive teacher, and she cares for her students very much.

Well, this photo was taken last year when I was on my holidays in Vietnam. That was a wonderful trip full of extreme actions and unforgettable experience. During my trip I was taking lots of pictures, but this one is my favorite.
You can see wonderful yellow fish in the foreground of this photo. In the background you can see rocks of various size and shape.
Actually, nothing much is happening in the photo. Some fish is swimming by in the depth of the see. Besides, the sun is trying to shine through but only some specks of light can be seen.
Why do I keep this photo in my album? First of all, I should confess taking photos is my hobby. Wherever I go I always take my camera with me. Even if I dive deep, the camera is always on. As to this photo, I was so much fascinated by such unusual look of fish that I couldn’t help taking the picture.
I decided to show the picture to you because I’d like to share my impressions from diving with you. I want you to see how beautiful the bottom of the sea may be and what unusual things you are faced there with.
Well, I hope you understand my feelings and how much I’m into traveling and diving. By the way, next year I am going to visit Vietnam one more time. Don’t you want to join me?

Well, this photo was taken last month when I dropped in her gym on my way home. She was right in the middle of her training when I saw her. I had never seen my sister doing intensive physical exercises so I decided to take the photo.
Once again, you can see my sister whom I have just spoken about. Plus, there are some other girls who are training themselves together with my sister. Besides, you can see some training equipment, which is being used by the girls.
You know, my sister is a willing trainee so she always puts a lot of effort to do exercises properly. In this photo you see how Julia is holding her dumbbells and keeping her left leg up. All her mates are doing the same. Look at the girls! They are so focused on what they are doing.
Why do I keep this photo in my album? You know, I don’t have any photos of my sister working out so hard. Frankly speaking, I thought Julia was not serious when she decided to attend fitness class. I was convinced she did it just for show. But I was mistaken very much. When I saw Julia doing her exercise I just couldn’t help taking the photo.
I decided to show this picture to you to prove the fact that my sister is a sporty girl, and she takes her fitness class seriously.

Слайд 32Ваш ответ Well, there are two pictures in front of me, and

now I am going to compare and contrast them.
To begin with, I’d like to say that both pictures are related to one theme. It is “bears”. The first picture shows us a bear sitting on some rocks in a zoo. It is being photographed by a lot of people. The second picture shows us a wild bear looking into the distance.
If you take a closer look, you’ll find a lot of common details in both pictures. Firstly, there is only one brown bear in the first picture as well as in the second one. Secondly, the action of both photos takes place in the open air. We can see that the bears are not in an enclosed area.
Despite the fact that these pictures have much in common, they are quite different. In the left-hand photo the bear is surrounded by a number of photographers while in the right-hand photo there is noboby but the bear itself. In addition to it, it seems to me that the bear in the first picture looks happier than its counterpart in the second picture.
As for me, I’d prefer to observe bears in a zoo, because they are dangerous animals, and I don’t want to put my life on the line.
In conclusion, I’d like to say that these pictures are quite interesting and worth discussing.

Слайд 33Ваш ответ Well, I have two pictures to compare and
contrast.
From

the very beginning, I’d like to say that both
pictures are connected with a very important topic. It is human environment. The first picture shows us an urban environment with high modern houses, much traffic, and the like. The second picture presents the countryside, which is very quiet, and nothing special is happening there.
If you take a closer look, you’ll find a lot of common details in both pictures. In
the first place, I’d like to state the fact that there are some buildings in both pictures. In addition to it, there is a road running through the scene, and greenery in both photos.
As far as differences are concerned, it is obvious that the houses are different
in the pictures. Absolutely! In the first photo we can see a number of skyscrapers and other city constructions made of reinforced concrete plates. In the second photo we can see plain small country-houses, which are nothing out of the common. Besides, the roads differ from each other in the pictures. In the left-hand picture, the road is wide and full of cars, buses, and other city vehicles. In the right-hand picture, the road is unsurfaced, and utterly empty.
As for me, I’d prefer an urban environment, though it is more polluted and less
comfortable to live. The reason is that a big city has more opportunities for personal development and making a successful career.
In conclusion, I’d like to say that these pictures are quite interesting and worth discussing.

Слайд 34Ваш ответ Now I am going to give a talk comparing and

two photographs.
To begin with, I’d like to say that these photos are
connected with a very important topic. This is “family life”.
In the left-hand photo you can see a happy family consisting
of four persons. It seems to me that they are celebrating
Christmas because there is a Christmas tree in the
background. In the right-hand photo you can see another
family consisting of three members. I guess they are having a birthday party because there is a birthday cake with the definite number of candles in it, and there are also birthday presents on the table.
It is at once apparent that both pictures have much in common. It goes
without saying they depict a happy moment of family life. The people are dressed up, and they are also in good spirits. By all appearances, they are having a good time. There is one more detail that makes the pictures alike. I mean children. Both pictures show us happy children who are surrounded by their loving parents.
As to the differences, I should point out the fact that the children are of
different sex in the pictures. It is a girl who is in the left-hand picture, and it is a boy who is in the right-hand picture. What is more, the number of persons is different. There are four persons in the first case while there are three persons in the second case.
Frankly speaking, it is difficult for me to decide what celebration to
choose because they both seem to be awesome. Nevertheless, I’d prefer Christmas because it is a holiday for not only getting presents but also for making them.
In conclusion, I’d like to say that it is very important to have a happy family and to celebrate occasions together.

Ваш ответ Now I am going to give a talk comparing and contrasting two photographs. To begin with,

Слайд 35Ваш ответ Well, I see two pictures, and now I am going

to
compare and contrast them.
As a first step, I’d like to say that these pictures are
about spending free time together. In the first picture
you can see a group of young people who are quad
biking in winter. In the second picture you can see a
party of friends who are going to watch TV.
If you take a closer look, you can see that these pictures have much
in common. First of all, I’d like to point out the fact that both groups of people are sexually mixed. I mean there are males as well as females in each group. In addition to it, they are approximately of the same age.
Despite all the similarities, these pictures are rather different. It is
obvious that the number of persons is not the same. There are three persons in the left-hand picture while there are four persons in the right-hand picture. Moreover, the first group is in the open air, in a thick forest. By all appearances, it is frosty and windy there. The second group is inside a house. They are sitting on a couch and feeling pretty comfortable.
As for me, I’d prefer having a party at home because I don’t like
extreme activities. Frankly speaking, I am not a sporty person, and, what is more, I hate winter.
In conclusion I’d like to say that it is just awesome to have good friends to spend free time with.

Слайд 36Ваш ответ Well, I have two pictures to compare and contrast.
Right at

the beginning, I would like to point out the fact that the
pictures are all about reading. The first picture shows us a girl reading
something from her iPad at the moment. The second picture presents
another girl reading a book.
Obviously, these photos have much in common. First of all, it is a
beautiful young lady that should be mentioned as a common element
of both situations. You can see that she is really carried away by reading,
and she doesn’t pay attention to what is happening around her. Frankly speaking, it seems to me that the girl in the first picture is the same as in the second picture. Anyway, they look so much alike that I could hardly say they are different. They have one and the same shape of body, form of head, hair length, and the like. What is more, both girls are smiling, and their smile is scarcely perceptible.
If you take a closer look, you can’t help noticing some differences. Firstly,
in the left-hand photo the girl has brown wavy hair while in the right-hand photo the girl has reddish-brown hair. Secondly, the book itself is different. In the first case the girl is reading an e-book downloaded into her iPad while in the second case it is a paper-book that is being read. It should also be noted that the action is happening in different places. The first girl is sitting on her comfortable couch at home while the second girl is standing in a streetcar.
As for me, I’d prefer e-books to paper-books, because a lot of e-books can
be easily downloaded from the Internet for free, and in addition to it, they are more comfortable to read.
In conclusion, I’d like to say that reading is a good way to spend free time
no matter what way of reading you choose.
