population lives mostly in towns and cities and their suburbs. Four out of every five people live in towns.
The distribution of the population is rather uneven. Over 46 million people live in England, over 3 million in Wales, a little over 5 million in Scotland and about 1.5 million in Northern Ireland.
The UK is inhabited by the English, the Scots, the Welsh, and the Irish who constitute the British nation. The British are the descendants of different peoples who settled in the British Isles at different times.

well-off than other Europeans. Most people have only three weeks paid holiday per year, and the bank holidays put Britain at the bottom of the list of Common Market countries as far as public holidays are concerned. British “bank holidays” are New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, May Day, Spring Bank Holiday, Summer Bank Holiday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Only when UK joined the E.E.C. New Year’s Day became a public holiday. The patron saints days are not celebrated with a holiday. They St. David’s Day in Wales, St. George’s Day in England and St. Andrew’s Day in Scotland. Only Ireland, both North and South, has holiday on St. Patrick’s Day.
