The word “football” was mentioned for the first time in 1175. An English monk described a football match between London students and young workers. That game was very different from modern football. There were no rules. Players could kick the ball and carry it in their hands. The field had no strict bounds. There was no limit to the number of players and there was always a lot of fighting. In 1314, Edward II banned the game in London, because it took time away from soldiery activities.
