Слайд 15How to make a choice and not to regret of it?

People often advise us to look at a situation from different sides. Anyway, there are at least four sides of the situation. We can make a decision regarding our own interests – this is one side. When we look at the situation regarding partner’s interests - that is another side. If we see the reality and some consequences of our decision – that is the third side. And if we are interested in results of our far future – that is the fourth side.
For example, your friend asked you to go to the cinema with him or her. But you have to write an essay in English and you have to give it to your teacher the very next day. What are the 4 sides of the situation? You yourself would rather go to the cinema. Your friend wants to get a cheerful companion; your teacher wants to get your essay the next day – these are your partners’ interests. In fact, if you don’t give the essay to your teacher, you won’t get a good final mark for the year. If you don’t go to the cinema with your friend, he or she will find some other companion to go with. Regarding the results, the essay will get you a mark (which is a school success) and then it will probably influence your mark for half a year period and it will be useful at your exam.
This is an all-round point of view, when we look at the situation from all sides.
Which side is more correct? The best thing is to add together all points of view and only after that make a decision. If you see the whole situation: your own interests, your partners’ interests, present reality and results of your decision – only then you can make the choice that you will not regret of.
So there are the following phases for making a decision.
When you don’t know which choice to take, divide a sheet of paper into 4 columns.
In the first column write down your interests and wishes, what you want to get from the situation. Concerning the teacher and the essay write: “I want to go to the cinema.”
In the second column write your partners’ interests, what they want from you. Think deeper than just, “The teacher wants to get the essay in time”, or “My friend wants to go to the cinema with me.” What do they really want or need?
For the teacher it is important to get your essay, because she wants to estimate your knowledge and to develop a plan – how to teach you next year. Your friend needs a companion to go to the cinema.
In the third column describe the consequences of any of your action.
Most likely your friend will invite some other person to go to the cinema. And you will be able to see your friend next week. The teacher will not be upset, if you don’t give him/her the essay in time. But this may spoil your mark. Is it important to you or not?
In the fourth column write how your choice will influence your far prospects: your aim of the month or year, aim of your life.
And then many things will become clearer and difficult choices will be easier.

How to make a choice and not to regret of it? People often advise us to look

What are the 4 sides of the situation? What will your choice be? You take part in the annual regional Olympiad where your school always wins, and you are the only representative from your school. Your parents are not in the city. But on the day of the competition your 6-year-old sister falls ill. She has a high temperature and a running nose.
There is nobody to look after her and she’s never stayed at home alone.
