Daily cadet food consisted of one pound loaf of white wheat bread in the morning. Only in1834 cadets started drinking sbiten. It included water, honey, cinnamon and cloves.
For lunch, we were given lazy green soup or, rice, pea and mashed potatoes with a piece of beef; pies, cabbage, carrots, buckwheat and millet grains. Main course consisted of a piece of chicken, goose or duck, and often a simple piece of beef was cooked. On Sundays and public holidays cake was added to this.
Dinner consisted of buckwheat, Smolensk and millet porridge with melted butter, "jacket potato" and a glass of good kvass.
We were fond of sweets, but we couldn’t go shopping to buy pies and sweets, because such purchases were strictly forbidden, and pocket money was not allowed for cadets.
