Christmas is a joyful religious holidays when
Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
The Christmas story comes from the Bible.
An angel appeared to shepherds and told them that a Savior had been born to Mary and Joseph in a stable in Bethlehem.

From the East followed a wondrous star which
led them to the baby Jesus
to whom they paid homage and presented gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Twas the night before Christmas when all through
the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
It hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

On December 24, Christmas Eve, Santa hitches his eight reindeer
to a sleigh, and loads it with present
The reindeer pull him and his sleigh through the sky to deliver presents to children all around the world.

There is a tradition that children should put a long
sock called a Christmas at the end of their bed or
by the chimney
or hang it by the fireplace
so that Santa Claus will fill it with presents.

In Scandinavian and other European countries Father Christmas or
Saint Nicholas comes into houses in the night and leaves gifts for the children.
Saint Nicholas is represented as a kindly man with a red cloak and long white beard.
He visited houses and left gifts, bringing people happiness.

rode on a magical flying horse
across the sky in winter to reward people with gifts.
These different legends passed across the ages to make the present – day Santa Claus.

he spends most of the year in the workshop making toys for children with the help of elves.

People buy and send Christmas cards to their friends
usually
containing message “ Merry Christmas”.
The cards usually show the pictures of “nativity (the birth of Christ ) , Santa Claus, Christmas tree, Robins”
Or scenes of old – fashioned Christmas.

The typical meal consists of turkey with potatoes and other
vegetables such as carrots and sprouts.
It is followed by Christmas pudding – a sweet pudding containing a lot of dried fruit and often covered with burning brandy.
The cranberry sauce, pumpkin, chocolate cream, Christmas pies follow the dinner.

The custom of a Christmas tree began in Germany, in
the first half of the 700s.
It is believed that Martin Luther first added lighted candles to a tree.
From Germany the custom spread to other parts of Western Europe.
It was popularized in England in the 19th century, by Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s German husband.

People sometimes go carol singing,
which means singing in the
street, outside people’s houses.
Carols are special Christmas songs.
They are song and heard all during the holiday season.

Because people give each other presents, in the days
and weeks before Christmas the shops become very busy. People often spend a lot of money on gifts. Many people enjoy this but feel that Christmas has become too much of business and so has lost its meaning.

In Britain, the day after Christmas is called Boxing Day
and is also a public holiday.
A lot of sports take place on Boxing Day and many people now spend time watching sport on TV.
They go to their friends and relatives.

are twelve days following Christmas.
The 12 days is
the chief time for choosing a Mock King to rule for a festive space.
In the 12th Night cake there is usually a silver ring or a coin but an older tradition demands a bean.
The bean is a powerfully magical thing enclosing within itself a symbol of the female principle.

The British author Charles Dickens spread the idea of
sharing in his story, “ A Christmas Carol”, written in 1854.
“ At Christmas time groups of people sing carols, both indoors and outdoors. They usually collect money for homeless and poor people…”
