Слайд 6In March 17th, Irish people all over
the world celebrate St.
Patrick’s Day.
Although this day is a religious and
national holiday for the patron saint of
Ireland , it has become a
popular festival for many
more people than the Irish
alone. It is said that everyone
is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, and the
world turns green on the 17th.
Слайд 7
St. Patrick's Day
Oh, my mother isn't Irish
And my father isn't too,
But
today I feel as Irish
As the really Irish do.
For today I wear
a shamrock
That is green in every way
And though I am Russian,
I am Irish - for today!
Слайд 8Who Was St. Patrick?
St. Patrick, the patron
saint of Ireland, is
one
of Christianity's most
widely known figures.
Слайд 9Who Was St. Patrick?
He was born in Wales about
AD 385.
His given name was
Maewyn Succat.
When he was 16, he was sold
into slavery to Ireland where he
was a shepherd for 6 years.
While in captivity he studied
and turned to religion.
Слайд 10Who Was St. Patrick?
He escaped slavery and later returned to Ireland
as
a Missionary, determined to convert (обращать)
Ireland to Christianity.
He traveled throughout Ireland,
establishing monasteries, schools
and churches across the country.
His mission in Ireland lasted for
thirty years.
He died on March 17 in AD 461.
That day has been commemorated as St. Patrick's
Day ever since.
Слайд 11Who Was St. Patrick?
Many of the myths and legends surrounding
the
man have been added to his achievements
over the years. It is claimed he chased all the
snakes out of Ireland.
Слайд 13
What are
the symbols of
St. Patrick's Day?
Слайд 14Green colour
Most holidays
that we celebrate
have special colours. Green is
the colour of Ireland and of
St. Patrick's Day.
Covered with green valleys and
fields, Ireland is known as the
Emerald Isle (Изумрудный остров).
In the language of colours, green
stands for nature.
It is also associated with spring
planting.
Слайд 15Green colour
On the holiday people wear something
green: a dress, sweater,
skirt, or pants,
a green tie, ribbon, hat, or socks.
Слайд 19Things that are green
The trees are green.
The grass is green.
My clothes
are green.
My nose is green.
Your chair is green.
Your hair is green.
Everything is green
on Match 17!
His hat is green.
Her cat is green.
His plants are green.
Her pants are green.
Our house is green.
Their mouse is green.
Everything is green
on Match 17!
Слайд 20Shamrock
Shamrock means «little clover» (клевер) in
Gaelic. And for centuries it
has been an emblem
of the St. Patrick as well of Ireland.
All over the world, St. Patrick's Day is a
time to wear a shamrock.
The shamrock is a clover leaf
with three parts, some people say
that the three parts are
the footprints of angels.
Слайд 21Shamrock
According to the legend, St. Patrick planted
shamrock in Ireland because
the three small
leaves represented the Holy Trinity: God the
Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
He used these three-leaves-
in-one to explain this Christian
idea.
Слайд 22I am a Shamrock
I am a shamrock
Who hides on the ground.
When
you come and find me,
Don't make a sound.
Pick me up very carefully;
Don't let me fall apart.
You can make a wish from me
By holding it close to your heart.
Слайд 25Leprechaun
One of the most appealing
of St. Patrick's Day symbols
is
the cheery, fat-bellied
tiny old shoemaker known to
us as the leprechaun. In his
green suit and cap, he adds
one more touch to the Irish
holiday.
Leprechauns work day and
night making the shoes for
the fairies of Ireland.
Слайд 26Leprechaun
In most stories leprechauns are rich and
bad tempered. They prefer to
live far
from the homes of people. If you see one
and keep your eye on him
he cannot disappear. He
might even tell you where
his pot of gold is hidden.
But a leprechaun can never
be trusted. Somehow they
always go away without paying.
Слайд 27
Leprechaun
Leprechaun, leprechaun, fly across the sea
And fetch an emerald shamrock for
you
and me.
Do not bring a nettle or a thistle for a joke,
But bring an Irish shamrock, for we are
Irish folk.
And you and I, my leprechaun,
will wear the shamrock gay,
And match it with
an Irish smile upon
St. Patrick's Day!
Слайд 29Top Hat
Another cheerful St. Patrick's symbol is an
Irishman wearing a
top hat. He is always
pictured as a happy-go-lucky (беспечный)
person with a good-humored look.
Слайд 31Celtic Cross
In Ireland, it is a popular myth
that the Celtic cross
was
introduced to the island by
Saint Patrick.
It is believed that he combined
the symbol of Christianity, a
cross, with the symbol of the
sun, to give pagan followers an
idea of the importance of the
cross by linking it with the idea
of the life-giving properties of
the sun.
Слайд 32The Blarney Stone
The Blarney Stone is a stone set in the
wall of the Blarney Castle tower, in the village of Blarney. Kissing the stone is supposed to bring the kisser the gift of persuasive eloquence
(blarney).
Слайд 35St. Patrick's Day honors St. Patrick, the patron
saint of Ireland.
Many people go to parties. They
march in parades, dance the
Irish jig and gather to sing
Irish songs, eat Irish food
and drink green beer.
People wear green in memory
of Ireland, the Emerald
Isle, wear shamrocks
and say to each other:
«Kiss me, I'm Irish»
Слайд 36St. Patrick's Day
St. Patrick's Day is here, you see.
We'll pick some
shamrocks, one, two, three.
We'll count the leaves and
look them over,
And maybe find a four-leafed
clover.
I'll sew green buttons on my vest,
Green for St. Patrick is the best.
I'll wear a green hat, very high,
And dance a jig--at least I'll try!
Слайд 38St. Patrick's Day Parades
Every year on March 17 people in many
cities of the USA, Great Britain and
others have St. Patrick's Day parades.
But the first parade took place not in
Ireland, but in the United States. Irish
soldiers serving in the English military
marched through New York City on March
17, 1762. Along with their music, the
parade helped the soldiers to reconnect
with their Irish roots, as well as fellow
Irishmen serving in the English army.
Слайд 40St. Patrick's Day Parades
There are now St. Patrick's day parades in
many cities with large Irish populations,
but the largest is still New York's.
Слайд 42Green Chicago River
Every year the St. Patrick’s Day parade is a
huge event in Chicago.
Before the parade you can watch
the Chicago River be turned Green
with food coloring dye (краситель).
The Chicago River Dyeing
happens at 10:45 AM on March 15th.
It lasts for a few days but
it’s dramatic to see the bright green
streaming from the boat
and see everyone on the bridges cheer as they
watch.
Слайд 43Drinking on St. Patrick's Day
Green beer (often Guinness) or any other
drink on
St. Patrick's Day is also a tradition.
People go to pubs and eat traditional Irish dishes:
corned beef (солонина) and cabbage,
mashed potatoes
Irish stew (тушеная баранина с луком и
картофелем) and drink beer.
Слайд 44Irish music
Traditional Irish instruments:
harp - арфа
fiddle - скрипка
bagpipe - волынка
accordion - аккордеон
Слайд 45Irish jig
Irish jig is a dance that is done to fiddle music,
specifically, Celtic fiddle music.
A traditional Irish jig is a series of hops and steps that repeat themselves over and over again.
Слайд 46St Patrick’s Day
On the 7th of May people in Germany celebrate
St. Patrick ’s Day.
It is a national holiday in Ireland, because St. Patrick is a patron saint of England.
People send greeting cards to each other, wear red clothes, sing Irish songs, dance hip-hop, eat pumpkin pies and say to each other «Merry Christmas».
They also wear roses, because rose is a national emblem of Ireland.
The symbols of this day are: grey colour, a shamrock, a witch, a pumpkin with a candle and parades.
The biggest parade is always in Moscow.
Everything is green on the 17th of April.
People in London colour the river green.
It is a funny holiday!
Слайд 47
St. Patrick's wishes and blessings
Слайд 51May the Irish hills caress you.
May her lakes and rivers bless
you.
May the luck of the Irish enfold you.
May the blessings of Saint Patrick behold you.
Слайд 53May the leprechauns be near you,
To spread luck along your way.
And
may all the Irish angels,
Smile upon you on St. Patrick's Day.
