of Crime. She wrote 78 detective novels, 19 plays, and 6 romantic novels. Her books have been translated into 103 foreign languages. They are the third best-selling books in the world .
Agatha Christie was born at Torquay, Devonshire. She was educated at home and took singing lessons in Paris. She began writing at the end of the First World War. Her first novel, "The Mysterious Affair at Styles" was published in 1920. That was the first appearance of Hercule Poirot, who became one of the most famous private detectives since Sherlock Holmes.
Agatha Christie became generally recognized in 1926, after the publishing of her novel "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd". It is still considered her masterpiece.
When Agatha Cristie got tired of Hercule Poirot she invented Miss Marple, a deceptively mild old lady with her own method of investigation.
The last Poirot book, The Curtain, appeared shortly before the writer's death, and the last Miss Marple story, The Sleeping Murder, and her autobiography were published after her death.
Agatha Christies language is simple and good and it is pleasant to read her books in the original.

Mark Twain was born in 1835 in the state of

Missouri, near the Mississippi river. He came from a poor family. His father died when he was 12, so he had to leave school.

Little Samuel spent his childhood in his native town of Hannibal on the Mississippi River. He had a lot of friends at school & when he became a writer he described them in his stories.
While he was a boy, he worked as a riverboat pilot. He steered boats up & down the long Mississippi River. It influenced him greatly.

In fact, even the name Mark Twain comes from the Mississippi. His real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. On the river Samuel often heard the boatman shout Mark Twain! This meant the water was 12 feet deep. When Samuel began to write he chose for himself the name Mark Twain.

His books are very interesting : “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”, ”The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, The Prince & the Pauper”, “Life on the Mississippi”.

Daniel Defoe was the founder of the realistic novel. He was

also a brilliant journalist and in many ways the father of modern English periodicals. He founded and paved the way for many magazines ( "The Revue", "The Spectator").
Daniel Defoe was born in London, his father, a butcher, was wealthy enough to give his son a good education. Daniel Defoe was to become a priest, but it was his cherished desire to become wealthy. His wish was never fullfield. Daniel Defoe was banckrupt several times. He was always in deep debt. The only branch of business in which he proved succesful was journalism and literature. When Daniel Defoe was about 23 he started writting pamphlets on question of the hour. He started writing pamphlets praising King William III, who was supported by the whig party. No matter in whose defence his brilliant pamphlets were written their irony was so subtle, that the enemy didn't understand it at first. But as soon as his enemy realised the real character of the pamphlets Daniel Defoe was sentenced to 7 years of inprisonment. It was a cruel punishment, and when they came for him to be set free, people carried him on their shoulders. This was the climax of his political career and the end of it. In 1719, he tried his hand at another kind of literature - fiction, and wrote the novel he is now best known: "Robison Crusoe". After the book was published, he became famous and rich and was able to pay his creditors in full. Other novels which Daniel Defoe were also very much talked about during his lifetime, but we do not hear much about them now. For example "Captain Singleton"(1720), "Moll Flanders"(1722).
