Located on the banks of the Voronezh river, 12 kilometers from its confluence in the don; distance from Moscow — 463 km.the Population of the city of Voronezh as of January 1, 2018 is 1 058 547 people. An agglomeration with a population of more than 1.3 million people was formed around Voronezh. business capital of Russia, acquired important state, economic, military and commercial importance. In the XVIII century, especially during the reign of Catherine the great, and later – in the XIX century, the city is further developed as an industrial and cultural center of the region. In 1725, the province was named Voronezh. Its territory was very extensive. Voronezh province in the middle of the XVIII century stretched to the North-East to the Volga, to Nizhny Novgorod, to the South - to the Azov sea. The city lived not only trade. Factories and plants, educational institutions and a printing house were opened, which became a full-fledged publishing house, around which a special literary circle was formed. In gratitude to Peter I Voronezh residents in 1860 put him a monument, which became one of the first in Russia.

In 1834 the first public library was opened, a couple of years later-the first local newspaper “Voronezh provincial Gazette". With Voronezh the second half of the XIX century, such names as I. A. Bunin, S. Y. Marshak, p. Platonov.
By the beginning of the XX century in Voronezh there were 1350 industrial, handicraft and trade enterprises, which employed more than 10,850 workers. The population was 94800 by 1913. By the beginning of the first world war Voronezh was in the second ten cities of the Russian Empire.
