The Romans went to England many, many years ago. They built
a town on the River Thames. The name of the town was Londinium. The place for the town was very good. Soon the Romans built a bridge over the river and a lot of roads to other parts of Britain.
Until 1749 there was only one bridge over the river – London bridge. The old London Bridge looked very strange – there were houses and shops on it. But one bridge was not enough for the growing city and in the 19th century there were a lot of new bridges in London. Now there are more than twenty bridges over the Thames.
