Слайд 3Mamayev Kurgan entered a bright page in the history of the
Battle of Stalingrad, which lasted from July 17th, 1942 to February 2nd, 1943. It spread over on a huge area of about 100 thousand square km, with participation of more than 2 million people on its different stages. The battle, giant in scale and significant by its impact on the further course of the war, became a kind of prologue of the Great Victory. On Volga banks the fascist Germany and its satellite troops suffered the most powerfully attack which they could not withstand.

The height 102.0 - on September 13, 1942 bloody
battles turned for Mamaev Kurgan and lasted almost 140 days and nights out of 200 days and nights here. The height 102.0 - so Mamayev Kurgan was called on the staff cards. It was vital lookout post and it was life or death to keep it protected. Soldiers swore an aoth to defend their Motherland.
Слайд 5Nowadays Mamayev Kurgan is primarily famous for the monument-ensemble called Heroes
of the Stalingrad Battle with the main monument called The Motherland Calls. There are some beds of honour and individual graves where more than 35 000 defenders of Stalingrad found their peace.
Слайд 6The Legendary Name of Mamayev Kurgan
Some people consider that the legendary
name of Mamayev Kurgan came from the time of the Golden Horde. There were guard patrols on the top of the hill and the head of that patrols was Mamay. The other ones are sure that the name of Kurgan comes from the Turkic word «mound, hill».

On the 15th of October in 1967
the monument-ensemble was solemnly opened. It is important to note that the ceremony was attended by General Secretary of the CPSU Leonid Brezhnev, Soviet Defense Minister Andrey Grechko, marshals Andrey Eremenko and Vasiliy Chuikov.

Сomposition «Memory of generations» at the pedestal of
the Mamayev Kurgan. It`s Entry Square .The composition represents a huge high relief consisting of 11 figures. There is a group of people who are going to honour the memory of the fallen fighters with wreaths.

Слайд 9The Avenue of Lombardy Poplars
The Avenue of Lombardy Poplars looks like
soldiers standing shoulder to shoulder. Just like the real heroes fighting together for the Motherland. It`s length – 223 m. You memorize great soldiers of the 112nd, 10th, 13th guards, the 95th division, the tankers of the 6th guard, the 62nd army under the command of Basil Chuikov, who was the main military consultant during the construction of the memorial.

From the Avenue of Lombardy Poplars there
are granite stairs, which are 6 meters and lead to the Square «Standing to death». «Standing to death!»- is the main theme of the monument, which represents the collective image of the Russian soldier. The sculptural image of a soldier as if growing together with the land out of the great Russian river Volga personifying heroic defenders of the Volgian strength.
«We didnt count time with hours,
But with the amount of patrons and grenades.
We were screaming with the last grenade while fighting:
We'd better die than leave Stalingrad»
Слайд 11Wall-ruins
Two Walls-ruins on both sides of it symbolize ruins of Stalingrad
after bombing. They look like the certain episode of the Stalingrad Battle. Figures of soldiers, weapons and tanks are depicted there. The ruins of a huge building destroyed by long term shooting attacks, endless bombings, direct hits and bursts of fire. through the walls we can hear the gun's shot, military songs, fighter aircrafts' roar and the famous voice of the Soviet announcer Yuri Levitan telling the news from the battlefields every 30 minutes.

Square of Heroes is marked by a pool(26,6/86
m) which represents the river Volga and water as a source of life in general. The pool is surrounded by six six-metre high statues of various soldiers that tells us about the heroic deeds of the Soviet people during Stalingrad Battle. Monumental Relief exhibiting main episodes of the great battle: the attack of Soviet troops at Stalingrad, blockading of the fascists and their destruction, the victorious movement of Russian forces to the west, the selfless labour of workers of the fronts.

The Hall of Military Fame on Mamayev
Kurgan is a tribute to those who didn’t survive to see the Victory, to those who was killed on the battlefield. In the centre of the room or, as it’s also called, the pantheon of Fame, you can see a marble hand with a lit torch. It’s a hand of help of those who died for the sake of the bright future of the Motherland.

Слайд 14The Square of Sorrow
Here the legendary commander of the 62nd
army, Vasily Chuikov, was buried. His grave is formalized with black granite slabs on which you can read: «Twice a Hero of the Soviet Union. Marshal of the Soviet Union. Chuikov Vasily Ivanovich. Undying glory!»He was buried on Mamayev Kurgan where thousands of soldiers who were beyond his control were buried.
Слайд 15The Сomposition «Mother's Sorrow»
It is an 11-metres monument located in the
opposite corner from the pantheon, to the left from the central axis of the ensemble, so to speak in a counterweight to the Hall of Fame. The sculpture group is made up with a figure of mother who is bending above her died son in an endless sorrow. It’s a collective figure of all soviet women who lost their closest people during the war: sons, husbands, fathers.

Nobody stood up from the ground
But how it is necessary for the soldier
To have someone to sorrow about him».
Слайд 16There is a climb to the top of the mound and
the basement of the main monument – The Motherland Calls! – starting from the Square of sorrow. There are reburials of 34 505 soldiers – the defenders of Stalingrad along the serpentine in the hill. There are also 37 granite gravestones of Heroes of the Soviet Union, participants of the Battle of Stalingrad

The monumental memorial is crowned by a colossal allegorical
statue named "The Motherland Calls!”. She rushed forward fiercely with her full might and power, a punishing sward above her head ready to collapse the enemy
The height of the sculpture is 85 meters together with the sword and 52 meters without it.
Our Motherland is calling us, calling all to defend our native land, our homeland, our roots. Today she calls her children to do the great feats needed to enjoy a bright future!

Слайд 18There is a tank tower on the granite pedestal near-by. It
marks the famous «Height 102». One can read an inscription on the desk: «Here, on the Mamayev Hill, during the Great Patriotic War in the battle for Stalingrad the most bloody and persistent fights for the possession of the dominating height took place.» Here there is a brother`s grave of the soldiers who defended «height 102». About 1500 17people are buried here.
Слайд 19A Memorial Park
A memorial park was planted at the foot of
Mamayev Hill. It started with the only tree planted by a woman, a worker of the Tractor Plant in memory of her fallen husband who defended Stalingrad. A lot of people who lost their relatives during the Great Patriotic War followed her example. Nowadays there are 20 thousand trees in the park. Some trees are marked with the names of the fighters. At the entrance to the park there is a memorial stone with an inscription: “This memorial park was founded in autumn, 1965 to honour the memory of the soldiers – defenders of Stalingrad”.
Слайд 20Mamayev Kurgan Memorial Complex ”To the heroes of the Battle of
Stalingrad” is the source of pride and patriotism for generations of Russian people visiting this place in order to cherish the memory of the victims who struggled for freedom and independence of their country.
Life was fighting with death here
Just here enemies found their death
And life has won in the battles in Stalingrad.
