1 Robert Burns and Kosta Khetagurov -
the pride and the
glory of the countries.
2Robert Burns,
a famous Scottish poet
and Kosta Khetagurov,
the lyrical
pride of our Republic.
3Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet, was born on January 25, 1759
in Scotland. His father, William Burns, was a poor farmer, There were seven children in the family, and Robert was the eldest.
4Robert was sent to school at the age of six, but
he attended school in turn with his brother.
Later Robert’s father taught him reading and writing, arithmetic, English grammar, history, literature, even Latin - that was Robert Burns's education.
5Robert Burns became fond of reading. He read whatever he could
lay his hands on. His favourite writers were Shakespeare, Smolett, Robert Fergusson, a talented Scottish poet (1750—1774).
6Robert's mother knew many Scottish songs and ballads and often sang
them to her son.
Burns began to write poetry when he was fourteen. He composed verses to the melodies of old folk-songs, which he had admired from his early childhood.
9 Robert Burns became a farmer too. At thirteen he
was out in the fields all day helping his father; at fifteen he did most of the work on the farm. He studied nature closely and working in the fields, he sang. In his songs he spoke of what he saw, of the woods and the fields, and the valleys, of the deer and the skylark, of the farmer’s poor cottage and the farmer’s love for his lass.
(My father was
an honest farmer) tells us the biography of the poet much better.
11My father was a farmer upon the Carrick border, O,
And carefully
he bred me in decency and order, O;
He bade me act a manly part, though I had ne'er a farthing, O;
For without an honest manly heart, no man was worth regarding, O.
Then out into the world my course I did determine, O;
Tho' to be rich was not my wish, yet to be great was charming, O;
My talents they were not the worst, nor yet my education, O:
Resolv'd was I at least to try to mend my situation, O.
In many a way, and vain essay, I courted Fortune's favour, O;
Some cause unseen still stept between, to frustrate each endeavour, O;
Sometimes by foes I was o'erpower'd, sometimes by friends forsaken

16Robert Burns's poems were very popular but he always remained poor.
He worked hard and ruined his health. He died in poverty at the age of thirty seven in 1796.
17 Scotland is as beautiful as our native republic with its
mountains and rivers, forests and fields. So we may say that only in Ossetia such a great poet and artist as Kosta Khetagurov could be born.
21Kosta Khetagurov, a famous poet and artist of Ossetia. He was
born in the village of Nar in 1859. He finished school there and then Kosta entered the Stavropol gymnasium.
22His favorite subjects were literature and drawing, that’s why he entered
the Petersburg Academy of Arts, but he didn’t finish it, because he had no money. So he came back to Ossetia again. There he wrote his wonderful poems. In his poems Khetagurov described the beautiful nature of his native country, besides he spoke about difficult situation of his people.
23But Kosta was very ill, so he died in 1906 in
the village of Novogeorgievsko-Ossetinskoe. People always remember his name. Parks, theaters and streets are named after Kosta.

29These English proverbs can characterize these famous people of Scotland and
Ossetia.
Deeds, not words.
Handsome is as handsome does.
30Both Robert Burns and Kosta Khetagurov did everything possible to develop
culture of their native country and so they have become the pride and the glory of their countries.
