Слайд 5WHAT IS EUROPE?
Europe is one of the world's seven continents. The

others are Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Australia and Antarctica.
It is the second-smallest continent, covering about 10,180,000 square kilometres. But its population is 731,000,000 people. So Europe is the third-most populous continent after Asia and Africa.

It is bordered by the Arctic Ocean and other bodies of water to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Black Sea and connected waterways to the southeast.

There are about 50 states in Europe. Russia is the largest by both area and population (although the country has territory in both Europe and Asia), while the Vatican City is the smallest.

Слайд 7WHAT LANGUAGES ARE SPOKEN IN EUROPE?
Most of the languages of Europe

belong to Indo-European language family. These are divided into a number of branches, including Romance, Germanic, Balto-Slavic, Greek, and others. The Uralic languages also have a significant presence in Europe, including the national languages Hungarian, Finnish, and Estonian. The Turkic and Mongolic families also have several European members, while the North Caucasian and Kartvelian families are important in the southeastern extremity of geographical Europe. The Basque language of the western Pyrenees is an isolate unrelated to any other group, while Maltese is the only Semitic language in Europe with national language status.
In addition to current languages, there are many languages once used in Europe which are now extinct.

Слайд 25IS IT DIFFICULT TO LEARN LANGUAGES?
Do you think it’s difficult to

learn languages? Can you be a polyglot?
You see, if you know one foreign language, it will be easier to study the second or the third one as different languages have the same roots. And besides, it’s cool to speak a lot of languages.
By the way, do you know that some famous people are polyglots? For example, a famous actor and sportsman Dolph Lundgren knows 9 foreign languages, including Finnish, Japanese and Russian? A well-known singer and actor Paul Robeson spoke more than 20 languages. Anatoly Ovsyannikov, a Russian journalist, knew 40 foreign languages.
