Pyotr Beketov on the banks of the river Chita . First, this settlement was named “the Ingoda winter hut” or Plotbichze with only 6 houses.
Later in 1687 Chita was mentioned as New Sloboda and some specialists consider 1687 the year of Chita’s foundation.
At the beginning of the 18th century Sloboda was renamed into Ostrog.
Since 1721 a lot of state criminals were exiled from Russia to Siberia, to Dauri, to silver plants.
In 1797 Chitinsky Ostrog became a settlement.
In 1821 Chita renamed the village.
In 1851 the village Chita became regional city of Zabaikalsky region.
In 1897 The Trans-Siberian Railway paved through Chita
In 1921-1922 Chita was the capital of the Far Eastern Republic.
From 1922 it was the center of the Zabaikalsky province.
In 1926 Chita became the district town of the Far Eastern Region.
In 1926, Chita became the country town of the Soviet Far East,
In 1937 it was the center of the Chita region.
Since March 1 2008 Chita is the administrative center of the Zabaikalsky krai.
