an English sea captain, navigator and politician of the time of Elizabeth the I . He was the first Englishman who made a trip round the world from 1577 to 1580.

Elizabeth I of England awarded Drake a knighthood in 1581. He was second-in-command of the English fleet against the Spanish Armada in 1588.

gave him money to pay for his ships and his men. With five ships and 166 men, Drake left Plymouth on December 13th, 1577. Francis Drake’s ship was called “The Golden Hinde”.

First, he sailed across the Atlantic to South America. Here he attacked the Spanish ships and stole their treasure and their maps. The Spanish had the best maps of the oceans in the 16th century. But he had to leave two of his ships in South America. The remaining three ships then sailed round the south coast of America. Lots of storms that went on for more than 50 days destroyed one ship. Another sailed back to England. The last ship, “The Golden Hinde”, went north along the Pacific coast of South America to California. From here they sailed across the Pacific Ocean to south-east Asia.

In Asia Francis Drake found many exciting herbs and spices. No one knew these herbs and spices in England. He took them with him on his ship. After this Drake sailed around the southern tip of Africa and back to England. He arrived in England again in September 1580.

in Devon in 1973. Its replica is now permanently located near London Bridge on the Thames and is a living history museum.
“The Golden Hinde” works with London schools. Guides dressed in pirate costumes offer history lessons on board the ship making learning more fun and interesting for children.
“The Golden Hinde” also offers other fun things that families can do: guided tours, children’s parties, special events such as “Pirate workshops” and “Pirate Fun Days”.

crew on the Golden Hinde’s Family Overnight Living History Tour for kids aged 6 to 11. On arrival you’ll be dressed in Tudor costumes as an officer, barber surgeon or gunner.
