The main street of Moscow originated from the road to Tver in the 15th c., when Tver Princely State was annexed by more powerful Moscow State. People used to say that Tver was a door to Moscow.

The Sytin’s printing establishment building, built by arch. Ericsson in 1905 in Art Nouveau style was moved towards the Triumfalnaya Sq. in 1979.

Tikhy Lane, near the well-known Nikitsky gate, is known for

its rich history and well-known inhabitants who glorified not only a capital, but also all Russia.
It was bear a name of the house owner M.Yu. Leontyev, a relative of Peter I.

To the middle of the XVIIIth century it was called Sheremetyevsky – the father of the well-known marshal who owned is huge yard. Till the middle of the XVIII century the former Kiev governor, the general M.I. Leontyev also lived there. His hereditary lands occupied the territory of houses No. 8-12.

After his death in 1741 Tikhy lane was renamed. Now it has the name Leontyevsky. It is one of the well – known lanes of Moscow.
The representatives of noble dynasties competed with each other in wealth and eminence. The Sheremetyevs, the Prozorovskys, the Golovins, the Tolstoys left the memory about themselves in names of estates and neighboring lanes.
In 1938 Leontyevsky Lane was renamed into Stanislavsky Street because Stanislavsky lived in this lane. In 1994 its historical name was returned to the lane.

House No. 5. In 1871 the site was

bought by Anatoly Mamontov. He founded a printing house and a publishing house in which for the first time there were children's books with Serov, Polenov, A.Vasnetsov, Malyutin's pictures. Mamontov ordered the building project for printing house to one of the leading architects of that time V.A.Gartman who built in "Russian" style.

The house No. 7 is the Museum of

folk art (S.T. Morozov handicraft museum). The left part was constructed in the middle of the XVIIIth century. In 1902 — 1903 an extension was built by architect S.U.Solovyov.


Sergey Timofeevich Morozov (on July 27 (on August 8), 1860, Moscow — on December 11, 1944, Paris) — the Russian businessman from Morozov's Moscow merchant dynasty, the patron, the organizer of the Moscow Museum of handicraft. Hereditary honourable citizen, collegiate asessor.
The managing director of Association of the Nikolsky manufacture «Savva Morozov son and Co». He spent a lot of money to put forward handicraft work.

The elegant turquoise house No. 9 with refined

shod lattice was constructed in the 1880s years according to the project of architect D. Chelyshev for N.A.Alekseev, the young mayor. The Alekseevs were engaged in cotton and woolen business and soon became the richest and eminent merchants. «He is rich, as Alekseev» - they said in Moscow. The well-known theatrical director Konstantin Sergeyevich Alekseev belonged to this eminent family. He became famous under a pseudonym of Stanislavsky.
Honourable citizen Nikolay Aleksandrovich Alekseev wasn't less known in pre-revolutionary Russia, and loved by Muscovites. «He was clever, gifted, with strong will and hot temperament», - B. Tchitcherin would say about him later. The forced people to do what he considered necessary. Being a mayor, Nikolay Aleksandrovich got general love and could obtain considerable funds on an accomplishment of Moscow.
When he had this position he managed to do a lot for the citizens of Moscow. For example, the Mytishchinsky water supply system was expanded. He paid his own money for hospitals, and for water towers at the Krestovsky outpost.














The buildings of the Historical museum, Merchant club (nowadays - Lenkom theater), the Polytechnical museum, GUM, a municipal Duma were constructed. When Alekseev was a mayor,new pavements were arranged, asphalt sidewalks, streetlights were established, the Alexander Garden was constructed . A lot of school and colleges (about 80) were built. Alekseev spent his own money on the construction of some of these buildings. The city extended and grew rich, getting profit from the enterprises constructed on loans. This period is called "Alekseevsky" or «the Golden Age of Moscow».
In 2007 major maintenance of a building with roof replacement was carried out. Now the Representation of the United Nations in Moscow takes place here.

The house No. 19 is the Gymnasium. The gymnasium

was constructed on means of the merchant of the first guild, patron Alexander Sergeyevich Kaptsov in 1893 and originally created as school for boys. It was divided into school for boys and girls later.
Alexander S. was the trustee of man's school to the death in 1897. After his husband’s death his wife Anna Mikhaelovna Kaptsova was the trustee of this school.

The house No. 6 — K.S. Stanislavsky's House

museum. On the first floor of this house the chambers of the XVII century remained. Nowadays existing second floor was built in the 1830th. The house is built at the end of the XVII century. At the beginning of the next century it was owned by I. P.Tolstoy, and in the middle by the captain-lieutenant of the Izmaylovsky regiment P. S. Hlopov.








From Hlopov the house passed to one of representatives of the Ermolov family, to major general N.A.Ermolov, the uncle of the well-known commander A.P.Ermolov. But K.S.Stanislavsky was the most known resident of this house. He was 58 years old when his family and he moved here in 1921. Stanislavsky lived in the house for 17 years and died here. In 1948 a memorial museum was created in the house.

The house No. 10 — Karatayevykh-Morozov's Estate with

the I.V. Morozov mansion, constructed in 1896, the architects are A.S. Kaminsky and
A.E. Erikhson.

Pavel Petrovitch Sorokoumovsky lived in this house.
He passionately loved opera and was engaged in patronage.
The Russian businessmen had a charity not simply in tradition: it was considered as something like a public duty.
