Past Simple
We use the Past Simple tense for actions which finished at a stated time in the past. The Past Simple tense is used with time expressions of the past.

The Past Simple Tense is formed with the help of the ending “ed” if we talk about regular verbs.
For example:

Auxiliary verb Main Verb
Past Perfect is used:
for a past action which happened before another past action or before a stated past time.
Example:
She had already left when I got home.
for a complete action.
Example:
She had arrived by 8 p.m. yesterday.
Note the difference:
1. When the telephone rang, Tom had already
left.
2. When she phoned, he left.
Say what people had done by a certain time in the past.

results or effect in the past
