Urals. More than one million
people live in it.
Three hundred years ago there was a small fortress here, named
Chelyaba. It was built in 1736 on the bank of the Miass river.
In 1878 Chelyaba came to be called the city of Chelyabinsk. Factories,
small plants and mill were built here.
Many factories were evacuated to Chelyabinsk from Moscow,
Leningrad, Kharkov and other cities during the Grate Patriotic War.
Tanks, legendary “Katyushas” and missiles were made there.
Today Chelyabinsk is a big industrial center of Russia. Steelmaking,
tractor plants and other factories give their products to our country.
New districts and houses are now being built in Chelyabinsk, and many
skyscrapers are going to be built here.

camel is a symbol of trade routes. Chelyabinsk grew up
because people bought and sold here very much.
Routes passed through it from East to West and from
South to North.
The camel is portrayed against the fortress wall. You
know already that our city became to be as a fortress. It
was made of wood and nothing is left after it. The
Regional Museum is situated now on the place where it
stood. You can see a model of the old fortress in it.

Many of them go daily, and even several
times a day, from the Urals to Siberia and back.
This is because our city is located on the border of
two geographic regions – the Urals and the West-
Siberian Lowland. One part of Chelyabinsk is “made of
granite” – this is Urals. And the other one is plain1. It is
situated in Siberia.

Kirovka. It is the pedestrian area of the oldest street of our city (it was called
Ufimskaya street before the revolution)
It is very interesting to walk along Kirovka and look at different sculptures. A
sculpture of policeman stands at the beginning of the street. A peasant and his
doggiеs reading near the Legislative Assembly. There is a young lady looking at
the mirror. There is a sculpture of a painter before his easel. Not far from it
there is a sculpture of a veteran of the Great Patriotic War sitting on the bench. A
cabmen on his droshky. A fireman at the barrel of water. There is a zero Verst
mark near the Main Post Office.
A garden leading to the Eternal Flame begins from Kirov street. A monuments
to volunteer tankers stands right at the beginning of this garden. A young worker
is standing on the tank turret. This tank was made in Tankograd. This was the
name of our city in the years of Great Patriotic War.

Troitsky Bridge is the most beautiful of them. It is also
the oldest one. It was build in 1924. It was called
Kirovsky at first. Troitsky Bridge connects the central
part of the city with Metallurgichesky and Kalininsky
districts.

It is the most beautiful building of the city. It started to
be built in 1937. The construction was stopped when
the Great Patriotic War began. Toolmaking plant Kalibr
was located in the building of the theatre in the years of
war.
The building was completed after the war. The
opening took place in the autumn of 1956. The opera
“Prince Igor” became the first performance12 of the
theatre.

Shershnyovsky pine-forest.
Pines, birches and aspens grow here. Many flowers
bloom here from spring till autumn. Many birds live in the
pine-trees: chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers, magpies,
chiffchaffs and cuckoos. Squirrels are not afraid of people and
you can feed them from your palm. You can see trails of
hares and foxes in winter snow.
These forests are natural monuments. We must take care
of them! Don’t make fires in the forests, don’t ruin plants.

This is the home for 443 animals and 133 species. There are
such rare animals as Far Eastern3 leopards, Steller’s sea
eagles and Siberian tigers5 among them.
There are special places for insects in the Zoo. There are
also a terrarium and rooms for tropical animals here.
Little visitors like petting farm animals very much. They
can pet a nanny goat and feed rabbits, chickens and ducks.
People take care of the area of the Zoo. There are beautiful
lawns with flowers and trees here.
