The plot in brief.

In Julio in Hungary, Lord Promos revived an old law by which incontinence was punished the death of the man and perpetual shame of the woman. As a result a young gentleman called Andrugio was condemned to death. His sister , Cassandra, thereupon petitioned Lord Promos to pardon her brother. Promos was so much delighted with her beauty and conversation that he reprieved Andrugio, but after a while his liking changed to lust and he demanded that she should ransom her brother by sacrificing her honour. Cassandra, won over by brother’s pleading, reluctantly agreed on the condition that Promos should then pardon her brother and marry her.

its general details resembles the story of the play, it is likely that some other versions, possibly one of the many Elizabethan plays now lost, was the actual source of Measure for Measure. But even if Shakespeare took his outline from Whetstone, he added the substitution of Mariana for Isabella, Lucio and the affairs of Pompey from his own imagination, and very considerably altered the details and the motivation of the plot. Shakespeare’s dark tragi-comedy embraces such controversial ideas as abuse of power, the temptations of the flesh and corruption of innocence. His Exquisite poetry and web of intriguing characters, with the shining figure of Isabella at its centre, ensure Measure for Measure remains an enthralling and contemporary.
