Petersburg, in the family of a doctor. During the civil war his family fled to Belarus for a year. In 1922 his father Vitaly Kantorovich died leaving the son to the foster mother, Paulina née Sachs. His creativity manifested unusually early. At the age of 14 he entered Leningrad State University.
