Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov (1711 - 1765) was the first

Russian natural scientist of world importance.
He was born in 1711 in the village not far from Kholmogory near the White Sea. His father was a fisherman and little Mikhail liked the trips with his father at the sea. His father had a quite large library and his mother taught him to read at a young age.
When he was 19 years old, he decided to study in Moscow. He went there with the fish train, practically on foot and with no things excepting the grammar and arithmetic books.

In 1730 Lomonosov entered the Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy in Moscow. He studied

Latin, politics, rhetoric, and philosophy.
Among the best pupils he was sent to the Saint-Petersburg Academy and then to the University of Marburg in Germany. After he had returned, he became the first Russian professor of chemistry in 1745.
Lomonosov knew more than 13 foreign languages and frequently wrote his scientific works in verse.

In 1755 Lomonosov founded the Moscow State University

which was named after him then.
In 1757 he became the vice-president of the Russian Academy of Science and a member of some European Academies.
Lomonosov died in 1765 in Saint-Petersburg.
His name is memorialized in many places, for example, an Arctic submarine ridge, an Atlantic current and even a crater on the Moon. There are monuments to Lomonosov in Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Arkhangelsk, Freiberg and Marburg in Germany.
