loved by all his countrymen. He was a poet of brotherhood who declared that a man is a man, must be treated like a man, have the freedom of a man. He sang the beauty and glory of his native land. He glorified true love and friendship. He was a remarkable lyrical poet, and he could also be humorous, ironical and satirical.

cottage at Alloway. His father, William Burns, was a hard-working small farmer, he passionately believed in education and made every effort to give his family good education.
At early age Robert began working on the family farm. He did the most of the ploughing and reaping as his father worn out by hardships and was unable to labour. As he grew older, the farm took more and more time and energy. His father’s death in 1784 made him free to choose his own kind of life.

Their success was great and Robert Burns became well-known and popular. Now he had the opportunity to see more of his native land which he loved so dearly. And this experience resulted in his writing some fine poems. Among them are “My Heart’s in the Highlands”, “John Barleycorn”, “Revolutionary Lyric”.

in 1784. She is immortalized in many poems. But when her father learnt about it he forbade Jane to see Robert. Jean obeyed and Robert being offended by it swore never to see her again and emigrated to Jamaica.
All his thoughts and feelings of that period of time are reflected in the poem “Eliza”.
There is a well-known translation of this poem into Russian by Samuil Marshak.

is full of sadness. In 1789 he bought himself a farm but he couldn’t make it pay. Then his friends got him a position in the Excise. This work wasn’t easy but it gave him time to think and at this period he created some of his best poems and songs. Such as “Lamet of Mary”, “Queen of Scots”, “Scots Wha’Hae” .
By 1796 Burns’s health greatly deteriorated and on the 21st of July, 1796, at the age of 38, the greatest poet of Scotland breathed his last in a little poor house in Dumfries. There he was buried, mourned by all honest people of his country.
