It is located on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. The name of the city was changed several times.
It was founded by Tsar Peter the Great. Between 1713–1728 and 1732–1918, it was the imperial capital of Russia. In 1918, the central government bodies moved from this city to Moscow. It is Russia's 2nd largest city after Moscow with 5 million inhabitants and the fourth most populated federal subject. It is a major European cultural center, and also an important Russian port on the Baltic Sea.
It is often described as the most Western city of Russia, as well as its cultural capital. It is the northernmost city in the world with a population of over one million. The Historic Centre of this city and Related Groups of Monuments constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also home to The Hermitage, one of the largest art museums in the world. 

SAINT PETERSBURG

middle of the Eurasian continent, on the border of Europe and Asia. At the 2010 Census, it had a population of 1,349,772.

It is the main industrial and cultural center of the Ural Federal District. Between 1924 and 1991, the city was named Sverdlovsk  after the Communist party leader Yakov Sverdlov.

EKATERINBURG

between Georgia/Abkhazia and Russia. The area of this city has a total area of 3,526 square kilometers  and sprawls for 145 kilometers along the shores of the Black Sea near the Caucasus Mountains. The area of the city proper is 176 square kilometers. Being part of the Caucasian Riviera, it is one of the very few places in Russia with a subtropical climate, with warm to hot summers and mild winters. With the alpine and Nordic events held at the nearby ski resort of  Roza Khutor in Krasnaya Polyana, it hosted the XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games in 2014, as well as the Russian Formula 1 Grand Prix from 2014 until at least 2020. It will also be one of the host cities for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

SOCHI

with a population of 1,523,801. It is the administrative center of  … Oblast as well as of the Siberian Federal District. The city is located in the southwestern part of Siberia on the banks of the Ob River adjacent to the Ob River Valley, near the large water reservoir formed by the dam of the … Hydro Power Plant  and occupies an area of 502.1 square kilometers.

NOVOSIBIRSK

the Black Sea. It is de facto controlled by the Russian Federation, which considers it a federal city within the Crimean Federal District.
It has a population of 342,451, concentrated mostly near the Bay of … and surrounding areas. The location and navigability of the city's harbours have made this city a strategically important port and naval base throughout history. The city has been a home to the Russian Black Sea Fleet, which is why it was considered as a separate city in Crimea of significant military importance.
The city enjoys mild winters and moderate warm summers; characteristics that help make it a popular seaside resort and tourist destination, mainly for visitors from the former Soviet republics. The city is also an important centre for marine biology; in particular, dolphins have been studied and trained in the city since the end of World War II.

SEVASTOPOL

80 kilometers long, north to south. It is situated on the western bank of the Volga River. The population is 1,021,215 
The city became famous for its resistance — and the extensive physical damage and death toll it suffered — during the Battle of Stalingrad against the German Army in World War II. Beginning in 2013, for nine days every year, the city may be officially referred to as "Stalingrad". Some residents have suggested that the city be permanently renamed "Stalingrad"; president Vladimir Putin has expressed that such a move should be preceded by a local referendum.
