that just about everyone has at least heard of them. A monstrous, black funnel descends from the sky winding its way over the ground, utterly indifferent to every living thing in its path. In fact, a tornado is defined as a violently rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground. With most violent tornadoes capable of tremendous destruction and wind speeds of 250 mph or more, they are truly nature's most violent wind.

What is a Tornado?

The weather phenomenon of tornadoes is so well known that just about everyone has at

Слайд 3 Both are violently whirling columns of air spawned by

thunderstorms, but in most usages of the word, the funnel refers to a vortex which is still aloft whereas a tornado has descended to the surface. If the condensation funnel has dropped more than half way from the cloud base to the surface, a funnel is generally called a tornado because by this time damaging winds are likely to be occurring on the ground. Sometimes the term funnel refers to the visible portion of the vortex whether the or not the circulation has reached the surface. The funnel can be made visible by either condensation (the funnel cloud) or debris or both

What is the difference between a funnel and a tornado?

Both are violently whirling columns of air spawned by thunderstorms, but in most usages of

Слайд 4 Lightning refers to one of the several forms of

visible electrical discharge produced by thunderstorms. It is essentially a giant spark that jumps between vast pools of positive and negative electrical charge that form inside thunderstomrs The primary forms of lightning discharges are cloud-to-ground (CG), cloud-to-cloud (CC), in-cloud (IC) and cloud-to-air (CA). Rare forms also include ball lightning. Lightning appears very bright because it is - its optical output is equivalent to some 100 million light bulbs going on and off.

What is lightning?

Lightning refers to one of the several forms of visible electrical discharge produced by thunderstorms.

Слайд 5 Technically, according to the National Weather Service, a thunderstorm

occurs when an observer hears thunder. Radar observers use the intensity of the radar echo to distinguish between rain showers and thunderstorms. Lightning detection networks now routinely track cloud-to-ground flashes, and therefore thunderstorms. Thunderstorms arise when clouds develop sufficient upward motion and are cold enough to provide the ingredients (ice and supercoooled water) to generate and separate electrical charges with the cloud. The cumulonimbus cloud is the perfect lightning and therefore thunder factory. That is why its is nicknamed the “thunderhead.”

What is a thunderstorm?

Technically, according to the National Weather Service, a thunderstorm occurs when an observer hears thunder.

This large hailstone fell from a tornadic supercell northeast

of Breckenridge, TX. The stones left a path miles wide littered with three to four and one half inch stones. The hail fell from a dark cloud base to the south of a developing mesocyclone. No rain or thunder occurred in the immediate area while the stones were coming down.Further to the northeast more large stones fell blocking chase crews from the University of Oklahoma from reaching the tornado
