The continent of Australia, with the island state of Tasmania, is approximately equal in area to the United States. Mountain ranges run from the north to south along the eats coast, reaching their highest point in Mount Kosciusko. The western half of the continent is occupied by a desert plateau that rises into rolling hills near the west coast. The Great Barrier Reef, lies along the northeast coast. The island of Tasmania is off the southeast coast. Australia is bounded by the Indian Ocean to the west and Pacific Ocean in the east. It occupies temperature to tropical climates. It borders with the countries of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea to the south, and New Zealand to the west. The national capital of the Australia is Canberra. There are six states: Queensland, new South Wales, Victoria , Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia. The seasons are here reversed to the northern hemisphere: summer from December to February, autumn from March to May, winter from June to August, spring from September to November

From tropical rainforests in the north, to the deserts of the Red Centre, to the Snowfields in its south-east, to the Australian Antarctic Territory, Australia is a vast and varied country. It has many internationally recognized World Heritage sites, including the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru-Kata, Tjuta National Park and the Sydney Opera House.
Australia is a leader in the global mining industry. Australia is among the largest producers of bauxite, iron and zinc ore, nickel and gold. Australia is also a major supplier energy, including coal, natural gas and uranium.
