I LIKE BREATHING

not easy but it is an excellent intellectual exercise. Classics are tales that challenge us, teach us because they stood the test of time, they give us a common culture.
Last year our team read ‘The Pearl’ by John Steinbeck. It influenced us deeply and we decided to read other Steinbeck’s works. So, we chose ‘The Grapes of Wrath’.
It is an American realist novel and it gives a fascinating insight into life in the USA during the Great Depression era of the 1930s.

A good book should leave you …slightly exhausted at the end.
You live several lives while reading it.

values, human unity and love, strength and survival, about global changes in the world.
One of the main ideas:
humanity must adapt to the changing conditions. Those who cannot adapt, cannot survive.
Tom Joad and his family are forced to move to California in order to find employment. They seek jobs, land, dignity and a future. They lose everything, they are starving, exhausted and angry but they stay human and great believers in a better future.
It is one of the most dramatic novels in American literature.

We would like to describe two of them.
Tom was about thirty years old. He was a tall man with dark brown eyes. His lips were firmly closed. His hands were very hard, working hands with broad fingers and short thick nails. He was brave and honest.

Ma was a heavy woman but not fat. She wore a long loose dress. Her bare feet were broad and strong, she moved quickly. Her hair was grey, her face was round. Ma’s eyes were not sad but they had known sadness and pain. She was the strong centre of the family. She protected her family from all the bad things. If Ma lost her strength, the family would break up.

The other central character is the land. Steinbeck describes it before any person comes onto the scene: … the red earth, dry and pale earth, dust…

desert. They stopped in the middle of the road and climbed down. It was California. There were vineyards, the orchards, the great flat valley, green and beautiful. There were farmhouses, peach trees and orange groves. The family hoped to find a home, land and food. They didn’t know it yet that there were three hundred thousand migrants in California and the Californians hated all of them.

This is not an easy novel to read and reality terrifies, but the readers learn about history as the book gives a fascinating insight into life in the USA during the Great Depression era of the 1930th.
The novel is about human relationship and family strength. We are sure, it would appeal to most people but we would especially recommend it for teenagers.
It would be ideal for intelligent teenagers studying English because readers learn about history as well as improve their language skills.
